Carl Peterson looking for a way to stand out against established seed companies, Carl and wife Julie call their first seed Ole, Sven and Lena soon follow.

Peterson Farm Seed is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2025, marking three decades as an independent, family-owned seed company based near Prosper, North Dakota. General Manager Scott Sanders says the company has built its reputation on being locally focused and investing in one of the largest independent seed testing programs in the Upper Midwest.

“What really makes us different is the fact that we have the largest independent testing program in the upper Midwest,” Sanders said. “We get to see a lot of things much earlier than a lot of other companies, and we see them for two or three years. That allows us to really ensure through statistical data that the products we have in our lineup are going to work in our farmers’ fields.”

1918: Oscar Peterson, founder Carl’s grandpa, walked from Wisconsin to North Dakota, finding a job as foreman on a steam-threshing crew.

Sanders emphasized that agronomy has been central to the company since its founding. Peterson recently expanded its agronomy team to provide stronger support for its dealership network across its three-state region. “If we’re going to continue to talk about leading with agronomy, I want to make sure that we have the best agronomic talent available,” Sanders said.

Looking at the fall harvest, Sanders said early signs are promising. “From a yield and protein perspective, so far the harvest is looking very cooperative,” he noted. “As anybody up in the north knows, weather drives everything. Hopefully it continues to look good and guys get in the field and get their crops out.”

Peterson Farm Seed also offers its Promise Plus program, a sales initiative launched about nine years ago to reward farmer loyalty. The program gives growers financial incentives, rewards, and a 0% financing option when they place seed orders between September 1 and December 15. Unlike most programs, the financing runs through farmers’ hometown banks, with Peterson partnering with more than 50 regional institutions.

Sanders closed by encouraging growers to connect with Peterson Farm Seed for tailored solutions. “If you’re looking for a seed company or someone to come out and look at your fields and really give you a good idea of what’s going on and how you can optimize the seed solutions that you put in your field, we’d love to hear from you,” he said.
