Washington, D.C. — The Farm Credit Council convened a panel discussion on agriculture during the Congressional Black Caucus’ (CBC) Annual Legislative Conference, one of the few agriculture-focused sessions in the history of the event.

The panel, titled “Reclaiming Rural: A Conversation on Agriculture, Policy, and the Future of Rural America,” explored how leaders in agriculture and rural policy are working to expand opportunities, preserve generational wealth and strengthen connections between Washington, D.C., and rural communities through sustained engagement and investment.

Representative Shontel Brown (OH-11), Vice Ranking Member of the House Agriculture Committee, served as honorary co-host and moderator. Distinguished panelists included:

  • Cornelius Blanding, Executive Director, Federation of Southern Cooperatives
  • Ryan Locke, National President, Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources & Related Sciences (MANRRS)
  • Kent Roberson, President, Black Professionals in Food and Agriculture
  • Dr. Jennie Stephens, Chief Executive Officer, Center for Heirs’ Property Preservation

Each panelist, representing a Farm Credit partner organization, and shared their insights, experiences and strategies to ensure that Black farmers and rural businesses not only thrive but also play a pivotal role in shaping the future of rural communities.

“Our panel discussion was a powerful reminder of both the history we need to confront and the future we can build together,” said Congresswoman Shontel Brown. “The voices of Black agricultural leaders and stakeholders must be at the table if we want policies that restore trust and open up opportunity in rural communities. I’m taking these insights and partnerships back with me to my work on the Agriculture Committee, where my focus is making sure federal policy better serves all people.”

The event drew congressional staff, agricultural stakeholder groups, media representatives and other conference participants.

“Farm Credit is proud to partner with valuable organizations who are shaping rural America and enhancing opportunities for success,” said Christy Seyfert, President and CEO of the Farm Credit Council.
