Fonterra Co-operative Group Limited is New Zealand’s largest farmer-owned dairy co-operative, made up of thousands of family farms that supply milk for a wide range of products. The co-op processes billions of liters of milk annually, turning it into dairy ingredients, powders, and foodservice products that are exported to more than 130 markets worldwide. In recent years, Fonterra has shifted its strategy to focus more heavily on higher-margin ingredients and business-to-business nutrition solutions, while moving to sell its global consumer-brand business—including well-known names like Anchor, Mainland, and Kapiti—to Lactalis. Financially, the co-op continues to deliver strong results, reporting revenues near NZ$23 billion in 2025 and paying a record dividend to its farmer-owners. Alongside its market strategy, Fonterra also emphasizes sustainability, with programs to reduce emissions, improve soil and water health, and support animal wellbeing—reflecting its commitment to both global competitiveness and responsible farming.
