CHS Inc., a global agribusiness and the nation’s leading agribusiness cooperative, announced it has opened a new propane terminal in Missoula, Mont. The facility will strengthen supply reliability for customers across western Montana and central Idaho, creating a localized, dependable supply point and new opportunities for growth in retail and wholesale propane markets. The terminal will be owned by CHS and operated by Energy Partners.
The new facility is designed to move up to 20 million gallons of propane annually and features two 90,000-gallon storage tanks, three dual-sided rail towers, two truck loading stations and one truck offloading station. The infrastructure is designed for scalability and allows for future expansion, positioning CHS to adapt quickly to market demand.
“Reliable energy supply is essential for the farmers, ranchers and communities we serve in Montana and Idaho,” said Scott Pearson, vice president, propane at CHS. “CHS is bringing propane closer to where it’s needed most, offering cost efficiencies through reduced freight changes. It also ensures our customers have dependable access to fuel for their operations and homes.”
The Missoula propane terminal will serve as a localized, dependable supply point in an area currently reliant on distant refineries and Canadian imports.
The terminal is projected to unlock up to 9.6 million gallons of new propane volume annually, expanding the capacity to serve both wholesale and retail customers. The investment is also expected to create freight savings, enhancing both customer value and the company’s competitiveness in the region.
The terminal will feature unattended operations 24/7, along with staffed service hours of 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday in the winter and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday in the summer.
This terminal reflects what can be achieved when strong cooperatives work together,” said DeWayne O’Brien, general manager, Energy Partners. “By partnering with CHS, we’re able to bring new infrastructure, supply security and economic benefits to the region that neither of us could deliver alone.”
