South Dakota State University is releasing a new hard red winter wheat variety to seed producers that combines high yield with high protein and drought tolerant traits. SD Vivian has performed well across South Dakota and will be available for farmers for fall 2026 planting.

Applications are now open for FarmPath, a national, multi-year initiative aimed at lowering barriers and expanding opportunities for aspiring and beginning farmers across the United States. The free, three-year program is designed to make farming more accessible and achievable by combining hands-on education, mentorship, and professional networking.

FarmPath provides practical instruction in resilient agriculture practices and farm management, while also offering in-depth training on the broader systems, markets, and decision-making strategies that influence long-term farm success. Participants gain access to experienced mentors and connect with a national network of professionals working across food and agriculture sectors.

The program also includes structured business training and financial support to help participants implement what they learn. “Through structured business training, mentorship, professional networks, and up to $10,000 in implementation funding, FarmPath is Farm Foundation’s direct investment in a new generation of farmers prepared to meet this moment in American agriculture,” said Shari Rogge-Fidler, president and CEO of Farm Foundation.

FarmPath is open to individuals from a wide range of backgrounds who are seeking to start or strengthen their farming operations. Organizers say the program is structured to address both production challenges and the business realities facing new entrants to agriculture.

Additional information, eligibility requirements, and the online application are available at FarmPath.org.
