Deficiencies in sulfur can slow early crop development, particularly in corn, canola and brassica crops, delaying canopy closure and extending the window for weed competition.”
Soil fertility also influences herbicide performance. Many herbicides move through the plant’s phloem to reach their target sites. When weeds are nutrient-deficient or under stress from drought or heat, phloem transport slows, reducing herbicide activity and overall control.
By investing in soil health and fertility management, you create conditions that support stronger weed control programs through improved water-holding capacity, greater nutrient availability and increased biological activity. “Every one percent increase in soil organic matter represents significant nutrient reserves, including roughly 1,000 pounds of nitrogen and 100 pounds of phosphorus, while also improving sulfur availability and water retention,” says Runge.
Additionally, pH management offers another opportunity for long-term returns. “Maintaining soils within an optimal range of 6.2 to 6.8 allows growers to extract more value from fertilizer and crop protection investments,” says Runge. “If you haven’t already done so, invest in regular soil testing to help keep soil pH where it should be.”
At the same time, proven agronomic principles remain as relevant as ever. Crop rotation, diversified modes of action, layered residual programs and precision fertility applications continue to deliver measurable value.
