WASHINGTON — Iowa Farmers Union President Aaron Lehman participated today in a Senate Democratic press conference on rising health care premiums, held by Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (N.Y.) and joined by Senators Amy Klobuchar (Minn.), Ron Wyden (Ore.), Chris Murphy (Conn.), and Andy Kim (N.J.). Later, he testified before the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, discussing the impact of rising health costs on farm families.

“It is hugely important that Iowa farmers and rural residents reach out immediately to our members of Congress,” said Lehman. “Too many in Washington live in a bubble. But in reality, the anticipated health care cost increases will cave in the budgets of farm families, and the damage will reverberate throughout our rural communities. We need to demand action now to extend support to keep health care prices affordable for ordinary Iowans.”

“We appreciate elected leaders reaching out to organizations like the Iowa Farmers Union to help tell the stories of what these policies mean for ordinary Americans like family-scale farmers,” said Lehman.

Building on today’s discussions in Washington, Iowa Farmers Union continues to advocate for policies that recognize the disproportionate impact of rising health costs on rural and farm households, support legislation that maintains or expands affordable health coverage options, and promote solutions that ensure farm families are not forced to choose between health care and keeping their farms operational.
